I really enjoyed “Dumplin’”, but not just because it was a “feel-good movie about a fat girl participating in a pageant and Dolly Parton and drag queens and cutie Jennifer Anniston”…. it was a good movie because the fat girl and the drag queens and the beauty pageant participants and Jennifer Aniston were not made into offensive stereotypes. They were human fucking beings. It didn’t subscribe to any ridiculous, tired tropes that so many similar movies seem obsessed with. The other “pretty” contestants weren’t nasty, mean bullies. There wasn’t any weird anti-gay or crazed fat shaming parent. It was just a nice movie that made me feel good about my fat self & made me wish that “Dumplin’” had been around when I desperately needed it as a fat teen.
